An athletic trainer is a person who has completed a four-year (Bachelor’s) degree at a college or university with an accredited athletic training program. An athletic trainer does not become certified until s/he also passes a national certification examination. They must also maintain CPR and AED certifications. Athletic trainers are unique health care providers who specialize in the prevention, assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries and illnesses.
The mission of the Sports Medicine staff is to prevent injuries, recognize when one occurs, evaluate, treat and recondition all of our student-athletes while under the supervision of a physician, so that they can return to their respective sport(s) as quickly and as safely as possible.
The Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) at Mount Saint Vincent works in conjunction with Hudson Valley Bone and Joint Surgeons and our head team physician Dr. Nicole Solomos, to make up our Sport Medicine Department.
Athletic trainers are an integral part of every collegiate athletic program to ensure that student-athletes are competing in a safe and healthy environment. Each Mount Saint Vincent student-athlete is monitored with yearly athletic physicals, medical questionnaires, and orthopedic baseline examinations. On a daily basis, the athletic training staff supervises all high-risk sport activities. Preventive measures are taken to reduce the risk of injury and/or re-injury. Should a student-athlete become injured, the athletic trainer recognizes and evaluates the injury, provides immediate care, makes a timely referral if necessary, initiates treatment and develops rehabilitation programs for all injuries. Education of student-athletes is extremely important in the areas of injury prevention, nutrition, hygiene, substance abuse, etc. This is done through the team physicians and athletic trainers who make up our Sports Medicine Department.
